Foundation Stage Guided Reading

 

In FS, all children take part in weekly guided reading sessions that focus on speaking and listening, phonics knowledge, decoding words and reading for enjoyment. We use the FS curriculum to ask targeted questions based on their reading level. Children are exposed to books slightly above their current reading level when in a guided reading group so new words can be explored and explained and children can be supported in understanding and responding to texts. Each guided reading group is heard once a week by the class teacher, the teacher hears each child read and the assessments gained during this informs their ‘next steps’. The small groups provide a relaxed, focused setting for children to explore books, share thoughts and opinions as well as practise their word reading skills.
